Litany is a series of short petitions and exhortations to which the people respond by the Kyrie eleison: Grant this, Lord: to Thee, Lord. In the East, marian litanies are numerous. From Constantinople the Litany was taken to Rome and the West. The Litany of Loreto, so called because of its use in the sanctuary of Loreto (Italy) since at least as far back as 1531, was officially approved in 1587 by Pope Sixtus V. Stamtąd, zwłaszcza z Konstantynopola zostały przeniesione do Rzymu i na Zachód. Litania Loretańska bierze swoją nazwę od Loreto, (Włochy). Sięga 1531 r., a zatwierdził ją papież Sykstus V w 1587 r.
